Drive to Beechworth
Day 3: Drive to Beechworth
We decided to have a bike free day, so took a leisurely drive to Beechworth via Mt Beauty. Since we were early to register at the Armour Motel (Ned Kelly had a big influence around here), we amused ourselves by walking around the historic sites.
Unfortunately we missed out on the gaol tour and the courthouse tour, where Ned was tried. They brought him up from the Melbourne gaol, so that they could take him back down to hang him. At least he saw a bit of the country before he died.
After booking into the motel, we took another walk along the gorge. Luckily the bridge across it was closed, so we couldn't walk the full 7 kms. Walking is such a slow way to travel.
We dined at the pub next door, discovering, to our delight, that momos and Nepalese curry were on the menu. Not as good as Ratna's but not bad. Not so bad that we have booked in for dinner again. Tonight is karaoke night, so I expect to be dragging Ray away in the wee small hours.

This bridge was built without any mortar in the 1860s. Still perfect, still standing. It only took about a year to build.
They cut this race to concentrate the water flow to help drive the gold mining process.
It spills out into Beechworth Gorge.

Wishful thinking, she's not in jail. But Ned Kelly was when he was tried in Beechworth after being arrested in Glenrowan. A relative of Brenda's was involved in the arrest of Ned back in the 1880s. Constable Hugh Bracken ensured that Kelly was kept alive to be tried rather, than being the victim of rough justice at the hands of the police.
She's getting away!!!!
