Still beaching
Ribadsella was picture perfect. Our hotel, a former palace, was right on the beach front and we upgraded to have a room looking out onto the beach. Some of us could have stayed there for the remainder of the trip. As is usual with Strachans on holidays in Europe, the wet weather has followed us. We were not to know that the sunny afternoon we spent in a cave, would be the last sunny afternoon we would see.
We took a drive to Covadonga, up in the Picos de Europa mountains, as it was very grey at the beach. Some of us thought it would be raining in the mountains, and some of us were right. I had to go up a winding road in pouring rain. We reached the end of the road, where there was a tiny village with a large church and some caves. But it was too wet to get out of the car. So the slave had to get our wet weather gear, just to run to the church. Some crazy English people appeared up a mountain track, and proceeded to have mass celebrated in English in the church. We quickly left. Our plan was to walk for 45 mins to a lake, but some of us thought it was just too wet and we returned to the beach in our nice dry car.
Our next mission was to buy some chocolate without paying for the cows as well. After visiting several chocolate shops, where you could purchase chocolate shoes, chocolate tools, chocolate iPads etc, we finally found our 500 grams for 8 euro. We should have got the chocolate tools to crack it with, as it is very thick. I am sure we will manage.
The sun managed to shine through just before it set last night, so we walked on the beach and found some sea glass for our new bathroom. If only we could figure out how to fit the great bits of slate that are lying around into our suitcase and be able to lift it!
We are now in Zarautz, just near San Sebastion, 300 Km's further east. Any further and we would be in France. We have a room overlooking an old museum, which must have been a church. The bell tower is just outside our bedroom window, and guess what? The bells still work. The beach is quite long and has waves. There was even a surf competition happening, when we went for a walk earlier. For such a beautiful coastline, this place is very ugly, being mostly filled with very ordinary apartment blocks.
Anyway, it is not raining, and we are off to Barcelona tomorrow. Our last stop before Paris and home.
Hasta la vista
